What is FASTag-Uses and Benefits

Mar 30, 2020 Alankit

With the introduction of FASTag, the Government of India has made it mandatory for all vehicles to make toll payments through FASTag on National Highways. The use of FASTag reduce unnecessary waiting period at toll plazas and allows the automatic deduction of toll fees with the use of RFID electronic device.

What is FASTag?

To define in the simplest way, FASTag is an electronic toll collection system rolled out by NHAI (The National Highways Authority of India). Affixed on the windscreen of vehicles, FASTag device employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to directly make toll payments from the user’s prepaid account linked to it. With the validity of 5 years, FASTag is a prepaid rechargeable tag and can be recharged based on the user’s requirement. Since a FASTag does not have any expiry date, it can be used as long as it is readable at the toll plazas.

Benefits of FASTag

Operated by NHAI, the implementation of the FASTag program on toll plazas on National Highways helps to enhance transportation efficiency as it assures faster turnaround for the movement of goods and travelers passing by. Below-listed are the benefits of FASTag:

• Saves Fuel and Time

The reloadable tag, FASTag helps to save fuel and time as it is read by the tag reader at the toll plaza and the amount gets deducted automatically as when the vehicle approaches the toll plaza for payment. Vehicles with FAStag on their windscreen are not required to stop at the toll plazas for the cash transaction.

• SMS alerts for transactions

FASTag users get the benefit of SMS alerts for every transaction, on their registered mobile numbers.

• Online recharge

The facility of online recharge helps the FASTag users to recharge their tag account online through Debit Card, Credit Card, RTGS, NEFT, or Net Banking.

• No need to carry cash

The simple to use FASTag doesn’t require waiting in long queues at toll plazas and also FASTag users need not worry about carrying cash along to make toll payments.

• Web portal for customers

It is easy for FASTag users to access their statements by simply logging on to the FASTag customer portal.
