Apply for Tan - Online Tan Application Form 49B

The TAN or Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is a 10 digit alphanumeric number required to be obtained by all persons responsible for deducting or collecting tax. Under Section 203A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory to quote the Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN) allotted by the Income Tax Department (ITD) on all TDS returns.

Two Types of TAN Applications:
This application is useful when the person deducting tax has never applied for a TAN before.
  • Issuance of new TAN (Form 49B) - Regular
This application form is useful if the person deducting tax requires to change or correct any details associated with their TAN.
  • Change/Correction in TAN data for TAN Allotted

How to Apply for TAN?

A TAN application can easily be made by depositing a duly filled form 49B at any of the TIN Facilitation centers. One can simply locate the nearest TIN facilitation center to their location, having the biometric-based facility.

TAN is then allotted to the various applicants by the income tax department. Nowadays, it has become really easy to apply for TAN online by way of an online application or physically by visiting the income tax department oneself.

The TAN application can only be made by way of using the form 49B. For any of the physical applications received, one is not required to submit any of the supporting documents to the department in question. However, for an online application, a valid acknowledgement received after the application submission is done in the form 49B needs to be provided to the department as proof.

Online Application Procedure for TAN

  • The individual applying for TAN is required to fill in the Form 49B online in an appropriate manner.
  • In case of any error, the same is required to be corrected rectified and the form needs to be re-submitted.
  • Next, a confirmation of the form submission along with the details of the data filled as provided by the applicant is displayed on screen.
  • The applicant is required to edit or confirm the same.

The person deducting tax may either make an online application through this website or submit a physical TAN Application to any TIN-Facilitation Center (TIN-FC) of Alankit.

Applicants may obtain application forms from TIN-FCs, download them from this website or get them through other vendors. Once received, applications are digitized by Alankit and forwarded to NSDL. NSDL then, issues the TAN letter to the applicant as per the TAN allotted to it through the IT Department.

Process Charges

The processing fee for the both the applications, Issuance of new TAN and Change/Correction in TAN data, is Rs. 62 inclusive of service tax.
